Preventing Slip and Fall Injuries at Your Business

No matter what business you are in, there are always things you can do to make the work environment better. Preventing slip and fall injuries may be one of them. Conscientious business owners want to ensure their employees and customers will not get hurt while on the premises. This is not only the right thing to do, but it is also the smart thing to do. Otherwise, you could find yourself facing a lawsuit.

Check for Hazards That Could Cause Slip and Fall Injuries

There are many conditions under which a person could slip and fall. Checking your premises on a regular basis will minimize the opportunities for such mishaps. Slick floors are often a problem. You may not always be able to avoid that, but you can post signs in areas where moisture or wetness may make the surface slick.

Some businesses may have areas that are prone to oil spills or leaks. An auto repair shop is an example. There are materials that can be put on the floor to absorb oil. Work areas should be limited to the mechanics or people who need to be there. Posting signs indicating slippery surfaces will help remind people to be careful.

Many businesses use utility mats at the entrances. These mats can sometimes bunch up, or a corner can get turned up, and a tripping hazard is created. Always check to see that the mats are flat on the floor. If there is curling around the edges that could cause a problem, replace the mat.

Lighting

Slips and falls can happen in areas where there is not enough light for people to see sufficiently. Walkways between rooms need to be well lit. Steps are another common place where lighting is important. Shadows can make it difficult to see. Eliminate the darkness by installing lights. If the area is one that is not used on a regular basis, you may want to consider installing lights that come on when they detect motion. Install sufficient lighting inside and outside of your building.

Floor Surfaces

Slip and fall injuries are also caused by poor quality floor surfaces. Uneven surfaces, cracks or holes in pavement or cement can precipitate a fall. If there are problem areas, be sure to repair them as soon as possible. In the event, the problem is not repairable, or it is not feasible to remedy the situation, signage to warn people is important.

These are just a few of the things you can do to make your business safer to prevent slip and fall injuries.
